Welcome to the InnerSolutions Blog!
I will be posting periodically explaining the many tools I use to help people create greater resilience, fulfillment and personal growth
Internal Family Systems (IFS): A Simple Overview
(Grounded in your open tab: Basics of IFS — InnerSolutions )
IFS says your inner world is made up of parts, each with a role, plus a deeper Self that can lead with clarity and compassion.
Below is the model in its simplest form.
1. Exiles
These are the younger, vulnerable parts carrying emotional pain.
Characteristics:
Hold wounds from past experiences
Carry feelings like shame, fear, grief, loneliness, helplessness
Often feel “too much” or “too overwhelming”
Get pushed away or suppressed by other parts
ex. of core beliefs:
“I’m not safe. I’m not okay. I’m overwhelmed. I’m hurt.”
Their hope:
To be unburdened and healed.
2. Protectors
Protectors try to keep Exiles from being hurt again. They come in two main types:
A. Managers
They work ahead of time to prevent pain.
Characteristics:
Highly responsible, controlling, perfectionistic
Plan, organize, avoid risks
People‑please or overachieve
Keep emotions tightly managed
Try to maintain stability and predictability
ex. of belief:
“If I stay in control, nothing bad will happen.”
“If other people are happy then I am happy.”
“If people like me than I’m okay.”
B. Firefighters
They act after an Exile gets triggered.
Characteristics:
Reactive, urgent, impulsive
Use distraction or numbing
Can shut down, withdraw, lash out, or seek relief
Try to stop emotional overwhelm fast
Their belief:
“I must put out the fire right now.”
Why Protectors behave this way
Both Managers and Firefighters are trying to prevent the system from being flooded by the Exiles’ pain. They are not bad — they are overworked yet extremely diligent at their job
3. The Authentic Self
IFS teaches that beneath all parts is the Self — your natural, unburdened core.
Characteristics (the 8 C’s):
Calm
Curious
Compassionate
Confident
Courageous
Creative
Connected
Clear
What the Self does:
Leads the internal system
Listens to parts without fear or judgment
Builds trust with protectors
Helps Exiles heal and release burdens
Creates harmony inside
Self’s message to the system:
“I’m here. You don’t have to do this alone.”
How the System Works Together
Exiles carry pain.
Protectors try to keep that pain from overwhelming you.
Self brings healing, leadership, and balance.
When protectors trust the Self, they relax. When Exiles feel safe, they unburden. The whole system becomes more peaceful and integrated.
